Naps – Make Learning More Efficient!

Have you ever wondered how having a nap can hugely affect student’s learning quality? After 7 hours of classes in Kaohsiung American School, students get tired. Classes go one after another, not seeming to stop until 3 o’clock. Exhaustion and lack of sleep can cause students not able to learn regularly. A short nap during daytime is the best choice for solving this issue, since naps give students energy for learning later on, have higher grades, and even make them happier.

Having a daytime nap can allow students to learn more later in the afternoon. In a German study, a six-minute nap helped volunteers recall a list of 30 words they had memorized earlier. Researchers agree that student’s memories can increase by 16% after taking naps during the afternoon. This surprising statistic shows how we, especially referring to schools without naptimes, should let students take a nap during the afternoon to make learning more efficient.

Not only do naps help students learn more, it also gives students higher grades. Students who take naps turn out to have grades 10% higher than the kids who do not take naps. A research showed that 584 students from 7 schools in Brazilian city of Natal had an experiment and the students who take naps seem to improve more on their test while the other kids who didn’t take naps did not improve. I know that KAS competes with many other schools by grades, and I believe that taking a nap can definitely cause a great change in student’s grades.

Lastly, students are in a better mood and are happier after they take a nap. Scientists state that napping is like re-organizing the brain and letting students think more deeply about things that are happening. When the brain of people are more organized, students are able to learn and not be irritated when they don’t understand. Happier students can also greatly increase the quality of the school and learning.

Naps help students get higher grades, learn more, and be happy. If KAS can start planning for all students to have naps, students will definitely do better in classes and learn more things. As a result, this plan should be put into action as soon as possible. So what are you waiting for? Try to take a nap somewhere before class starts in the afternoon instead of going out to have recess and waste all your energy for learning. Napping won’t make students smarter, but it can help improve their memories and solve problems. Sleeping well at night, and long enough, is associated with good health. The combination is a two-step approach and the basic way to lead students to success.

This is a video Kaitlyn, Issa, Francis, and I made. It teaches us how to reduce stress other than napping!
