Pattern Design

When I first started to design my carpet patterns, I had a picture of a symmetrical pattern in my head. So, I started first with the geometric shape designs in the center. The diamond-like shape was originally a square, with its corners at the borders of the four pieces of paper. However, I then had an idea to divide the corners of the square to three identical segments. I connected the corners to the borders of the papers, and a geometric shape I never thought of appeared. At first, I left this shape alone to work on the four star-like shapes on each piece of paper and the designs at each corner. However, I found out that the design now lacks creativity between values. The geometric shapes I created were blank, so I decided to add values to them. It turned out that my design looked a look better after that. The great contrasts at the four sides of my pattern design got the idea from zentangle. In zentangle’s example, they used circles like one of my patterns. However, I turned the shape at the opposite side of the circle into oval while the other two sides square and rectangle so that it creates a pattern and movement of the shapes. I also used hatching to fill out the background at each corner. Originally, I was planning on leaving it blank, but then I noticed that the corners are no balanced in colors, so I used the things I learned before to fill in the blanks. This also created emphasis in the spheres.  The spheres at the corner were also inspired by the works I did earlier. I used value to shade the spheres so the light seems to come from the middle. The eight needlelike shapes at the corner were actually created by mistake. At first, I only wanted to connect thin lines, but I traced one of the lines from the wrong place, so I decided to color them in, and it became my favorite part of this artwork. The four starlike shapes were inspired by the shop by the street I live in. They had something similar to this design and I had this idea of creating it. To create it, I had to use rulers and pencils to make the most accurate assisting lines so the four of them can create harmony and a sense of unity. The organic shapes were added at the end of my design. They were used to fill in the spaces after the geometric shapes are drawn in. The four twisted clocks were inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I also let the time of the clocks change, which creates a rhythm to the design. For the organic shapes, I drew music, plants, lighting, and mud to create a variety to the organic shapes.

Improvements I can make to this artwork is to create more variety of patterns. I should also fill in the blank spaces between the star-shaped squares. I also regret putting stripes on the lines outside the diamond. I can also have better craftsmanship in coloring in the values for shapes.

Base Units

Above is my infographic about base units.

The Rise and Fall of the Roman Republic

This is my MYP summative assessment for Individuals and Societies. In this unit, I learned about the four types of Greek Government, Life in Athens and Sparta, and the Roman Republic. I decided to focus my topic on Roman Republic because for me, it is the most interesting topic among the rest. However, all of these chapters give us an idea about systems, and inform us how they provide structure in earlier civilizations (even now!) such as Greece and Rome. To stay simple, a system is a group of different things that work together to reach a goal. They hold up the society, and keep things in place. This unit mainly focuses on the rise and fall of the systems people came up with. Throughout this unit, I had learned many key concepts of systems and other vocabulary words, I also gained knowledge by learning one of the earliest empires.

The Pythagorean Theorem

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNvjAfKTeY0

The Pythagorean Theorem (a2 + b2 = c2) is the coolest theory I ever known so far. This small video proves that the Pythagorean Theorem is real. At the beginning, two squares of the equal area are shown. One of the squares split into two squares (look carefully!) You will realize that the area of the two smaller squares and the area of the biggest square can form a triangle in the middle.

How the Government Impacts the Six Aspects of a Civilization in New York City

As one of the most well known cities in the world, New York is thriving (Burnett & Klein, 2016). New York is located at the northeastern part of U.S and borders with Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Canada, and the Atlantic Ocean (New York, 2016). The governing leader and governing style helped New York become such a great city by many ways. The governing leader and governing style of New York City has impacted New York by mainly through constantly creating high tech industries, effectively responding to threats by strong military forces and building museums to provide citizens different art perspectives.

The governing leader has impacted New York by creating high tech industries not only for citizens to use, but also for trading with other countries (The world factbook, 2016). With the world leading high technology innovator and second largest industrial output in the world, New York factories produce petroleum, steel, motor vehicles, chemicals, electronics, lumber, and mining (The world factbook, 2016). New York also has the second largest output in the world, with 20.8% of the economy being shipping industries (The world factbook, 2016). Besides that, the Apple Company is also located on the Fifth Avenue (Apple store, fifth avenue, 2016). All this helps provide a convenient life for the New York citizens.

However, the world leading industries has caused global and environmental threats, which are issues the governing leader has to face. The truth is, the governing style helped respond to both global and environmental threats by strong military forces and raising public awareness (Oreskes, 2016). Terrorism such as ISIS has been a threat to the US since 2013 (Syria Iraq: The islamic state militant group, 2014). As the first place of the world ranking for the strongest military force in the US, which has 145,215,000 manpower available, US has kept the citizens quite safe from ISIS (United States of America military strength, 2016). For environmental threats, all kinds of pollution such as air pollution, and noise and light pollutions are seen and the New York government had responded by raising public awareness (Cost of living in New York, 2016). All these responds to threats gave the citizens a safe place to live in.

The governing leader and government style also increased the art perspectives of the citizens. As the 3rd richest country and 17,970 billion US dollars, New York has more than 48 museums for citizens to visit. (The world factbook, 2016). These museums collect all artworks from the world, including well known artists such as Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso in the Museum of Modern Art (Burnett & Klein, 2016). Besides, New York provide educational sources in museums for citizens to use (Museum facts, 2016). There are approximately 850 million of museum visitors in the US everyday (Museum facts, 2016). As you can see, this can be one of the reasons why the literacy rate in New York is higher than any other countries. As a result, these museums did increase art perspectives and literacy rates of the New York citizens.

High tech industries, strong military forces, and education resources such as museums has provided citizens a convenient, safe, and fun place to live in, which is the reason why people from other parts of the world flock to this great city.

Value Landscape of the Sea

Claire's Value Landscape

This is my drawing of the sea during sunset (that’s why it’s orange). The further it is, I add more white to the original color while I add black as the scenery gets closer. This creates values for landscapes.
