This is what we worked on for our Language Arts unit. We were asked to create a companion book for an already existing book using the writing techniques and strategies we learned from this unit. I based my companion book around Jandy Nelson’s complex I’ll Give You The Sun.
This is a mind map that’s comparing 5 speeches; Ashton Kutcher’s, Justin Timberlake’s, Coach Vaughn’s, Martin Luther King Jr’s, and Mary Schmich’s. On the map, you can see the basic structures of each speech and its similarities with each other. I’ve also attached our Martin Luther King Jr-esque speech that we were all supposed to write.
During this unit, our main focus was on governments and systems. More specifically, we learned about the Roman Republic, Greek government, and Roman/Greek militaries. The 4 types of Greek government was probably one of the most interesting ones for me because it was really cool to see how the type of government changed as the people started to evolve and want different things. The government quickly adapted to the people’s needs and stayed there for a while before that type of government started to fail and a new type of government was introduced. Throughout this whole unit, everything we learned was somehow based on a system; the Republic, Greek government, and how the military systems worked. The main thing that I gathered from all these different types of systems is that a system is when a group of different things come together to function or work for a certain cause. The whole unit was based on how these different systems came together and fell apart. During this unit, I learned a lot about how small countries can quickly become a large empire and that there are a lot of what ifs in history. For example, if the Gracchus brothers somehow managed to maintain balance, would the Roman Republic have survived longer. I also improved by learning a lot about the key concepts of different systems.
