Throughout the semester, I have improved in many categories including analyzing, organizing, producing text and using language. Today I will only be focusing how I improved significantly on producing text.

In the beginning of the school year, I had limited vocabulary which caused me to write the same sentence structures over and over again. Another issue was that sometimes my writing and speech didn’t allow the readers and listeners to understand the context and my intention. One of the first TIEA that I wrote was the Diction in Ringworm. In the TIEA I wrote, “Speakers of Mandarin are very well connected to the foreign world, such as China, America, etc. On the other side, Taiwanese are stereotyped to be considered as local and rural language.” This didn’t really convey what I wanted the reader to know, also the connection of the sentences was really unnatural.

The evidence that shows my biggest improvement in producing text is my, This I Believe essay. The word choice and vocabulary that I used in this piece has a nice variety. Because of this, it allowed me to connect the sentence structures better and express my feelings more easily, and in a more competent fashion. For example, in my last paragraph of the essay, I wrote, “My parents always seemed cheap. Dad would always pump gas and not use the full service available…… This, however, changed everything I thought of them.” The last sentence, “This, however,” allowed me to switch the topic, but still having a smooth transition to the next line that I wrote, “The house I live in is where it is because there is a school nearby……My parents were thinking of me when they made the biggest purchase of their lives. The other evidence that was in the This I Believe essay have I used my grammar, syntax, and punctuations correctly. I also had zero spelling mistakes in it.

At the end of the semester, I believe I deserve a 6 for my producing text. I have reached all the criteria for Producing text which are:

1. uses a varied range of appropriate vocabulary, sentence structures and forms of expression competently
2. writes and speaks competently in a register and style that serve the context and intention
3. uses grammar, syntax, and punctuation with a considerable degree of accuracy; errors do not hinder effective communication
4. spells/writes and pronounces with a considerable degree of accuracy; errors do not hinder effective communication
5. makes sufficient use of appropriate non-verbal communication techniques.
