source: I’ll Make a Man Out of You Lyrics by | From Mulan Soundtrack. (n.d.). Retrieved February 16, 2015, from http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/mulan/illmakeamanoutofyou.html

Analysis:

This song is about sending a girl to learn fighting. This song is bias. For example at the start “Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?” The author is saying that a girl can’t learn to fight only boys can learn how to fight, this is a gender stereotype. Then at the middle part the lyric “Heed my every order and you might survive”, the author think that girls can’t survive in a fighting camp which is also a gender stereotype. The author thinks even with his help the girl won’t survive. At the very end, the lyric said, “So pack up, go home you’re through How could I make a man out of you?” The author say he tries his best to help the girl, but the girl should not do man things, that’s why the author say “how could I make a man out of you?” The author thinks she is too weak because she is a girl. That is a gender stereotype.

The audience will want to figure out what is it and what does it mean. When the audience understands it, they will think the pencil is as smooth as shark. “Break The Stereotype” 2013. Web. 14 Feb. 2015.

The meaning of stereotype is an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about all people or things with a particular characteristic. The most common stereotype is gender. In this artwork, the creator is trying to tell the audience we should not have a stereotype about gender. The creator uses a skirt to represent women, so the audience can understand why it said “Break The Stereotype”. The creator made a woman that has muscles. The creator is trying to say not every woman is weak. Lots of people think that only men are strong. The artwork is a black and white image that has no other colors. The creator wants to show “color” has stereotype itself.

Similarity:

All of these artwork, commercial, and lyrics have hidden bias in there. Some are about stereotype, some are about propaganda. For example, in the lyrics analysation, both songs are about gender stereotype. The first lyric is about girls can’t learn how to fight. The second lyrics is about a girl want to be a boy for a day. The girl thought of lots of stereotype stuffs about boys.

Difference:

All of these artwork, commercial, and lyrics have hidden bias in there. But their meanings are different. For example, In the Pepsi and the Coca-Cola commercial, the commercial is trying to make Pepsi look very good and make Coca Cola look very bad. They are trying to let us think that Coca-Cola company are bad. In the Faber Castell commercial, the commercial is trying to make their company better. Each bias has their own meaning. Not every commercial are about persuading people to buy their product.

Ronald and I are going to act out the examples. The first example is about a stereotype and the second example is about propaganda. Owen will be analysing the examples. After looking at this video, students will understand the type of bias.
