1) What is a variable?
- A variable is a placeholder for any value.
2) What does it mean to evaluate an algebraic expression?
- It means to replace the variable or variables with know values and then use the order of operations to solve it.
3) Below is an example problem with a variable. Define the variable and then write the sentence as an algebraic expression.
Pick a number, add 2, multiply by 3, subtract 6, divide by 3. What number will you always get?
- x = pick a number
- [(x+2)×3-6]÷3
- If x = 3, the expression will be 3
- If x = 4, the expression will be 4…..
- You will always get the number that you pick.
