Perspective Letters Unit Reflection

Perspective Letters Unit Reflection

Introduction:

In this unit, we explored about perspective drawings, I learned a lot techniques from perspective drawing unit, we have done several practices that improved our perspective drawing skills. Here is the list of what we have done.

  • One-point perspective (One point perspective is a type of linear perspective. Linear perspective relies on the use of lines to render objects leading to the illusion of space and form in a flat work of art. It is a structured approach to drawing.drawing practice on notebook)
  • Summative perspective letters drawing
  • Two-point perspective drawing practice

Overall, I think I did good at the beginning based on the few practices we have done. However, as we developed further and becoming harder, the work would be graded as we got further, I don’t think I actually did a great job for this summative. I have done two drawings, mistakes and errors occurred during in both drawing process. However, I focused more on a Chinese proverb, so I will be reflecting on my second artwork instead.

I Process:

  1. First of all, I adumbrated my plan before drawing and then did a quick sketch by a harder pencil.
  2. Secondly, I shape the letters with darker pencil, spacing of the letters is also important, I was trying to create appropriate space between letters.
  3. Connect points on the letters to the vanishing points, the way I connected it depends on its position, my letters is under eye level which means I had to make it looks like we are looking at the letters from its top.
  4. I started drawing the patterns for each letter after shaping the letters. I drew patterns based on what does each of the letters mean, for example, “狗” in Chinese means dog, so I drew some footprints on the letter which represents the dog.
  5. After all, sketch working, I traced the letters with marker again which emphasize the letters and also balanced the letters as well.
  6. I started coloring the letters after that, I colored the front first with the same darkness
  7. After that, I colored the sides of the letters with different darkness which created values. The way I created values to apply different darkness with different forces, so there are different values shown in the letters. Coloring the letters with values also make a contrast between the sides of the letters and itself.
  8. After coloring all the letters and the inside decorations, I started drawing its shade using watercolor pencils
  9. I applied different values based on where the light comes from to make the shades look better

II Creative thinking Process

Inspiration: Chinese new year, the proverb represents Chinese new year and an auspicious sign to everyone and bless everyone to have a great year in 2018, the reason for why I chose 旺狗來富 is because It shows the meaning of contemporary chinese new year, the proverb is not aged, it’s from a younger Calligrapher.

Color: I chose the color yellow for 旺 and 富. First of all, yellow represents money and the word 富 also represents money, and I chose yellow for the word 旺 because it fits the pattern dragon.

I chose red for 狗 because it represents chinese new year, and the word 狗 is the most important letter in the proverb because the word狗 represents dog and when I colored it as red, it represents dog year. I chose blue for the word 來 because in chinese, the word 來 means “come, coming” and blue represents rains, and rain is an idiom that represent “come”

III Evaluation of elements and principles of art

In my work In my peer’s work
Line The lines were okay, I did an okay job at tracing the lines and sketching. The lines could have been better, she didn’t use a ruler while drawing straight lines.
Shape The shapes of my letters are not as good as my group mates because I connected to the wrong point at the beginning. She has very organized shapes, she has redone a new one which is a lot better than her previous one.
Space The spacing between letters is not an issue in my drawing, I think I have done an okay job in my artwork based on spacing. She also has good spacing, it’s organized and her drawing is unique due to spacing.
Color I think I had chosen the wrong colors for my artwork even though each color has its own meaning. However, the colors don’t fit each other and it doesn’t represent “Chinese” except the color red. All her colors fit the word “bang” the colors make the letters more creative and it feels like the word pops out in all of sudden.
Value I have drawn many values in my artwork, values make the artwork looks more “3D” In my peer’s work, she doesn’t draw values on the letters, these letters look less “3D” no values are shown in her drawing which makes it looks more boring.

The quality of principles I used in my artwork

Unity /Harmony

Overall, I think my artwork constructed harmony, there is a contrast between the word and the background with the shades, but I could improve on coloring because that doesn’t construct a harmony between those letters in my artwork, the color selections of my artwork were unwise.

Movement

I could have improved on movement based on the pattern design, there are not enough patterns are shown in my artwork.

Balance:

My artwork is balanced based on the shapes of the letters. However, I think I could improve on coloring the letters in order to make my artwork more balanced.

Contrast

There is contrast based on the position of the letter and where the light is located at, I apply values on the letters and there would be contrast between each elements.
