Perspective Letters Unit Reflection

Perspective Letters Unit Reflection

Introduction:

In this unit, we explored about perspective drawings, I learned a lot techniques from perspective drawing unit, we have done several practices that improved our perspective drawing skills. Here is the list of what we have done.

  • One-point perspective (One point perspective is a type of linear perspective. Linear perspective relies on the use of lines to render objects leading to the illusion of space and form in a flat work of art. It is a structured approach to drawing.drawing practice on notebook)
  • Summative perspective letters drawing
  • Two-point perspective drawing practice

Overall, I think I did good at the beginning based on the few practices we have done. However, as we developed further and becoming harder, the work would be graded as we got further, I don’t think I actually did a great job for this summative. I have done two drawings, mistakes and errors occurred during in both drawing process. However, I focused more on a Chinese proverb, so I will be reflecting on my second artwork instead.

I Process:

  1. First of all, I adumbrated my plan before drawing and then did a quick sketch by a harder pencil.
  2. Secondly, I shape the letters with darker pencil, spacing of the letters is also important, I was trying to create appropriate space between letters.
  3. Connect points on the letters to the vanishing points, the way I connected it depends on its position, my letters is under eye level which means I had to make it looks like we are looking at the letters from its top.
  4. I started drawing the patterns for each letter after shaping the letters. I drew patterns based on what does each of the letters mean, for example, “狗” in Chinese means dog, so I drew some footprints on the letter which represents the dog.
  5. After all, sketch working, I traced the letters with marker again which emphasize the letters and also balanced the letters as well.
  6. I started coloring the letters after that, I colored the front first with the same darkness
  7. After that, I colored the sides of the letters with different darkness which created values. The way I created values to apply different darkness with different forces, so there are different values shown in the letters. Coloring the letters with values also make a contrast between the sides of the letters and itself.
  8. After coloring all the letters and the inside decorations, I started drawing its shade using watercolor pencils
  9. I applied different values based on where the light comes from to make the shades look better

II Creative thinking Process

Inspiration: Chinese new year, the proverb represents Chinese new year and an auspicious sign to everyone and bless everyone to have a great year in 2018, the reason for why I chose 旺狗來富 is because It shows the meaning of contemporary chinese new year, the proverb is not aged, it’s from a younger Calligrapher.

Color: I chose the color yellow for 旺 and 富. First of all, yellow represents money and the word 富 also represents money, and I chose yellow for the word 旺 because it fits the pattern dragon.

I chose red for 狗 because it represents chinese new year, and the word 狗 is the most important letter in the proverb because the word狗 represents dog and when I colored it as red, it represents dog year. I chose blue for the word 來 because in chinese, the word 來 means “come, coming” and blue represents rains, and rain is an idiom that represent “come”

III Evaluation of elements and principles of art

In my work In my peer’s work
Line The lines were okay, I did an okay job at tracing the lines and sketching. The lines could have been better, she didn’t use a ruler while drawing straight lines.
Shape The shapes of my letters are not as good as my group mates because I connected to the wrong point at the beginning. She has very organized shapes, she has redone a new one which is a lot better than her previous one.
Space The spacing between letters is not an issue in my drawing, I think I have done an okay job in my artwork based on spacing. She also has good spacing, it’s organized and her drawing is unique due to spacing.
Color I think I had chosen the wrong colors for my artwork even though each color has its own meaning. However, the colors don’t fit each other and it doesn’t represent “Chinese” except the color red. All her colors fit the word “bang” the colors make the letters more creative and it feels like the word pops out in all of sudden.
Value I have drawn many values in my artwork, values make the artwork looks more “3D” In my peer’s work, she doesn’t draw values on the letters, these letters look less “3D” no values are shown in her drawing which makes it looks more boring.

The quality of principles I used in my artwork

Unity /Harmony

Overall, I think my artwork constructed harmony, there is a contrast between the word and the background with the shades, but I could improve on coloring because that doesn’t construct a harmony between those letters in my artwork, the color selections of my artwork were unwise.

Movement

I could have improved on movement based on the pattern design, there are not enough patterns are shown in my artwork.

Balance:

My artwork is balanced based on the shapes of the letters. However, I think I could improve on coloring the letters in order to make my artwork more balanced.

Contrast

There is contrast based on the position of the letter and where the light is located at, I apply values on the letters and there would be contrast between each elements.

MS ART Y3 Carpet Design Reflection

Theme and Analysis:

This artwork is focusing on naturalism, the beauty of naturalism and environment, but there are not many places left with no human destruction, the most outstanding pattern design which located at the center represents flower, the whole pattern design is formed by single color but with different values, creating values properly makes it looks more likely to flower.

The reason for why the flower at the center is outstanding and becoming a focal point is due to different values which is a technique of emphasis using values, trying to make a specific object in the design become a focal point, its left side is based on dark theme, if right is based on bright theme, which would have made the flower fitted in to the themes and could not be outstanding because it’s too bright. However, I added a rhombus hill behind which makes the flower looks more outstanding from the dark.

My Design creates a big contrast between bright and dark, In my opinion, It would be more attractive and easier to recognize.

Process:

Sketching:

For sketching process, I started the design with sketching vaguely with pencil, Outline shapes and its position, the main and outstanding pattern design is at the center, it the pattern becomes more complicated as it focuses to the center, due to that, I only adumbrate my plan, I drew few circles and irregular shapes in order to ensure the positions.

Sketching also helped me with other places, starting the position. As you see at behind the flower, there is a hill formed by rhombus which is a kind of organic shapes, I labeled the location of the rhombus hill first, so I would notice about its position when I actually start drawing.

For these flowers, some are situated at the very front, some are behind, I also adumbrate my drawing plan and labeled the locations. So it created a 3D- looking.

Shaping:

After adumbrating the drawing plan, I did the shaping, which would be more detailed, converting sketches to detailed shapes.

Designing Patterns:

I would add patterns with no values after shaping, the theme of patterns would be based on naturalism and environment, I used cross hatching and hatching as the additional decorations, smoother lines, rhombus and other irregular shapes as the main patterns.

Finally, I would start adding values, add values makes the design looks harmonic and it would be balanced as we done it in a right way.

I shaded the left area with dark blue in order to make a contrast between the right area.

Unity and Variety:

(Unity in an artwork creates a sense of harmony and wholeness, by using similar elements within the composition and placing them in a way that brings them all together.Variety adds interest by using contrasting elements within the composition.)

In my artwork design, for the flower, as the focal point, the petals are designed in different sizes and value, different sizes and colors show how a composition can be unified by similarities.

Unity in my design: same shape; Variety in my design: Different sizes/values

Artistic Response:

-What kind of design you had in your mind when started?

The first thing that popped into my mind was the environment.

-Have you changed your mind or decision or the design?

How?I kept my idea the same while designing.

-Why did you choose the shape/pattern you choose?

Shape: Shapes of plants and hills makes the design fits my theme, naturalism

Patterns: These patterns are all designed based on naturalism.

-How did you decide the shading in areas you did?

In order to make a contrast, I would shade one area, and left a space for another one.

-How did the decision influence the way it came out?

In good or bad? How so?

I think that was a right decision for me to make, I re-checked it when it was done, I could clearly see the contrast and it makes the main object more outstanding.

-Was there any difficulty and how you overcame

The most difficult part was designing the flower, it is really detailed.

Possible Improvements:

Line: Could have drawn the line with stronger force applied so I wouldn’t keep drawing the same line repeatedly.

Shape: Could have been more careful while drawing shapes

Space: Could have left with less space but can still see the contrast.

Ceramic Garden Self-Assessment/Reflection Anderson Chen, 2018, 2,2

Materials:

  •  Needle tool
  • Scratching tool
  • Pointing tool
  • Canva
  • Wire Cutter
  • Kiln
  • Clay

My Process:

  1. First of all, I divided they clay into pieces using a wire cutter, and got the relevant amount for my work.
  2. I started my work with a canvas under it.
  3. Briefly shaped the clay and adumbrated my plan, I was focusing on magical and naturalism, and I shaped a base first for my other items and started to shape the main items and external decorations.
  4. After shaping the clays, I needed to stick all the items together to become one piece of work, I stuck them together by using scratching tool in which scratches the clay and make the clay adhesive when contact with water.
  5. After sticking them together, I started decorating the clay by using needle tool and pointing tool. Needle tools are used for smaller details and pointing tools are for bigger details. The tools would make my work looks unclean which I would need to fix them in the next step.
  6. As I mentioned, I needed to fix the unclean parts created by the tools, I split some water on it and smooth it by hands.
  7. Dry the clay for 2 weeks and put it into the kiln

Artistic Response:

Inspiration:

I got the idea from my previous artworks, which are focusing on naturalism. However, I wanted to do something quite different, so I added a new element, magical, the idea of magical was inspired by the book I’m reading, named Harry Potter.

Analysis of artwork:

Simply put, my artwork looks like an island, there’s an apple tree and “brick” mountain which doesn’t exist in real-life, I created an approximate same amount of space between items on the island, so It looks more balanced. In my artwork, I’m trying to emphasise the tallest feature, I drew more details focusing on the tallest feature which creates a contrast between features.

It was really hard to shape the clay, especially for smaller details, it would also produce residues of clay and make the artwork looks very unclean.

Shaping the clay was also really difficult because the actual artwork would look very different than your thought to that artwork.

Evaluation:

In my work                                                             In my peers work

Line: the outline of my artwork looks a little incomplete, more details could have been added. Not too many details, only the shape
Shape: the shape of my work looks ok, just needed to clean more residues. Detailed shape, creative decorations
Space: I created a relevant space for each feature. She has two separate artworks, good spacing between decorations
Texture: My artwork creates good texture by decorating details. For example, my apple tree, I made the trunk looks more realistic. She barely decorated her artwork with more realistic details, couldn’t see the texture.

Self-Assessment:

Pattern: Could have applied more patterns into my artwork. My thought to this artwork was magical, but the patterns I drew are focusing on realistic, so I could have added more creative patterns.

Emphasis: couldn’t really emphasise the brick mountain, could have used other better ways.
