Getting in to the field of Sports Science/Kinesiology CAS Feb Reflection (2)

Creativity/Activity/Service

Sports has been my passion for a long time, arts is also my passion, but I know clearly I’m not pursuing either of these two careers, so I was really worried about which path should I go, and about 6-7 months ago, I began to dig into research about kinesiology, because I wanted to increase my vertical jump, and I accidentally found this passion of mine that I can actually pursue, for the past 2-3 months, I’ve been testing out if this passion is an actual long term passion instead of 3-minute passion. And I believe this is actually a long-term passion because I don’t like studying, but I like studying kinesiology, listening to podcast, read some scholarly journals.

I’ve been listening to a lot of kinesiology podcasts such as PJF performance and Andy Galpin, I’ve been watching their videos for a long time and gained a lot of knowledge, they have appeared to be very entertaining throughout the last 6 months. This gave me a lot of directions for research, and PJF performance also taught me a lot about how to conduct research more professionally.

I created a social media platform that simplifies the knowledge I learned about kinesiology and sports science for student-athletes, elderly people, people who have been dealing with injuries,  or anyone interested in the topic of sports science, most importantly, I can learn more, for ex, if people ask questions, then I can do research on that topic, this also tracks what I learn,  I will be creating a series of posts, my first series is called building explosiveness and prevent injuries, this is targeting student-athletes, the post below is my first post, the post is in both Chinese and English, i will start teaching them some basic knowledge, then as people learn more, I will move on to the more advanced context, the next post will be common tendon injuries and how to prevent them, the third post will be how does tendon stiffness affect vertical jump and how to build tendon stiffness.

What makes this a CAS?

this is creativity because the images are all drawn by me, and I come up with the design too. This will also be an activity because I will be demonstrating exercises, for example, I will be demonstrating some movements that will build tendon stiffness in the following post, meanwhile. This is service because right now, I am helping people in my community, and as the account grows, I will be able to help people outside of my community, the benefits of bilinguality on this platform can potentially help people internationally too.

Creativity

We finished the drawing, it took each of us 30 hours to create these 2! But all the effort was worth it in the end, because our drawing turns out really well. (Mine is the left one, Amelie’s drawing is the right one)

Throughout this process, Amelie and I had to communicate with each other and figure out which color would best fit with each other, each of us wanted to show a unique style in our own drawing to make it more interesting, we didn’t want these two to have the same color, what we wanted was to use different colors,  different style, yet the two drawings have to fit with each other.

This process also challenged my time management, throughout this week, I had a lot of school work, and I had to complete the drawing in one week too, the pressure motivated me to manage my time better.

Besides drawings, my Chinese classmates and I also prepared a short performance for the CNY celebration, I’m the cow on the left.

Creativity: #AnotherME (Valentine’s Day Event) by Charity Art Club

This valentine’s week we decided to host an event called #AnotherME, we created this event because we wanted to create an event that encouraged more interactions and also exciting, so what we did was we sent a form to all high schoolers, people who wanted to participate would fill out a form that asks about their personalities, then they would write down their phone number, our exec Claire built a google sheet that automatically pairs people with similar responses,  and after a week, we would send them a customized digital card (designed by CAC) with a phone number, participants have to figure out who the person is by themselves by either calling them or texting them.

105 people participated in this event, which surprised me a lot, during the planning phase, the executive team did not have too much confidence in this project because it is so new, it has never been done before, so we had no idea how many people would participate, my expectation was 40 people. When one of the executives brought up this idea, I saw it as a joke that she made, I was also not really confident in her idea too, but after seeing her being so serious, I decided to give it a try, and trust my teammates. After this experience, I learned that I should listen to my groupmates’ ideas more carefully and take it more seriously, a lot of times I just do things “my way.”

Chinese New Year Drawing

Amelie and I started a project about CNY, we drew two Menshen that are about 1.6 meters tall, we’re not finished yet, we will finish the drawing by 2/7 and exhibit the drawings on the front door of KAS on 2/8, Amelie and I had to communicate with each other during the drawing session because we made different versions of the MENSHEN based on our own drawing style, but we eventually we came to the agreement that it would be better if we all draw in the same style so two drawings present harmonically.

Activity

Volleyball practice over the week

This week I practiced volleyball a lot, I asked a few of my friends who were also going to the tryout to come to practice with me. I practiced a lot of spiking and serving because my aim is to play middle blocker or outside hitter,  which requires a lot of spiking. Even though I only practiced volleyball for one week, I thought it was worth blogging because I believe this is undertaking new challenges, I’ve never played volleyball before, but after playing with my friends and watching volleyball clips with my volleyball addict friends, I became addicted to this game too. So I want to learn this new sport, in order to learn this sport better, I must make the team to receive proper training, so my goal was to make the volleyball JV team, and turns out I did make the JV team. We will start training on 22nd of Feb, I believe my vertical program really helped me a lot.

2021 TISSA basketball tournament – this is the most important tournament of the season, we visited TES in this tournament and played the semi-final and championship game, and we won first place! We were once down by 15 points, but one thing that helped all of us to come back was the mental aspect of the game, after the game, we reflected upon our game, including the mental aspect of our game, we adjusted our thinking and no one ever showed any negativity throughout the game even when our teammates made a mistake. I believe that was a really important factor that contributed to our win.

Creativity/Service

This weekend I have been editing my documentary about elderly population in Taiwan (this is the second video, I reached out to a lady in a traditional supermarket and talked to her for a while, I reached out to her multiple times during my break. For this video, I will be interviewing her and filming a day in her life.) I believe this is both creativity and service because I get to do something I like while raising awareness about this social issue. (I interviewed her on the issue of elderly population) This time I’m aiming to make a more “professional” video, so it also requires more effort on creativity.

December CAS (2)

Creativity

As the first semester of my junior year comes to an end, my parent asked me what I want to do during winter break to relax, I told them I needed to restore my energy in a very cold and secluded place, I chose HeHuanShan (Mt) located at NanTou, my hotel is located at the height of 2400m, and we climbed a 3400m mountain, living on the mountain was extremely calming, the temperature remains around 3-7 degrees, the air is also refreshing, I had a really enjoyable time there, it was a restorative for my exhausted mind after the first semester. I also spent some time drawing as I’m enjoying the view!

Activity

I came back from NATURE on Wednesday Night (12/23), after a 3 day break, it is time to get back to my vertical program, my vertical program has been modified a little bit, the last change was made in the beginning of December, and I managed to dunk a volleyball and almost succeed on the alley-oop (catch the ball in air and dunk) on December 18th, the last basketball practice of the first semester, my vertical has improved gradually throughout this program, and as I learn more and modify the program, it becomes better and better.

This is what this week looks like, I have done a lot of research throughout my vertical program and there are a lot of new movements, information added into this plan.

December CAS (1)

We played 4 games in December so far, and I’m gradually improving through the games and trainings, for example, my mental state has become better, I started to hustle more on both defensive end and offensive end, and I tried my best to ignore the audience because it would be distracting. Below is our most recent game against Chi Hsien, (I am number 21) although they are in middle school, they are in D1 basketball league, which makes the game really tough for us, we were leading by 10 points by the 4th quarter, but our biggest mistake is that we thought we could win this game so some of us began to relax in some plays, this caused us to blow the 10 points lead in the final quarter.

Varsity Basketball Friendly Game End November CAS (2)

We played two games in the final two weeks of November, the first game is against TaiZu, a Division 1 Middle School team, it was a really close game, the final score was 51-55, what I learned from this experience is that I need to communicate more with my teammates, and put extra effort on defense. The team was really quiet in our first game, so we need to encourage everyone to communicate with each other more and make the team start functioning again.

In our second game against HsinChuang D2 Highschool, the varsity team only played first half, , then Junior Varsity will also join this friendly game. I still find myself too quiet in this game, sometimes I’m afraid to take control of the ball, I must overcome this fear, I always fear being embarrassed by the opposing team in front of the crowd, I believe as I play more games, I will have better mental toughness.

Charity Art Club Winter Sale CAS End November Reflection

For the last two weeks, I have been preparing for our CAC’s Winter Sale on 11/28, this time I applied a lot of things I learned from last time, for example, I distributed the jobs very clearly to all the executives, with exact things they needed to do, and I also gave exact job descriptions to all the helpers during that day. The event went really well and it was a major improvement compared to the tote bags event, all the executives worked really hard and we all had the same goal together, it was a really good experience working with them because every one of them spent a lot of time on this despite having a lot of homework.

All the hardwork and preparations was worth it, we made 11480 NTD in 4 hours sale, our pins and stickers received a lot of good feedback, because this time we decided to use the best quality customizing company on both pins and stickers, we still have 200-300 stickers and some pins, they will be put on our upcoming CAC’s website which is still under construction, and we will select 100 stickers to give it to Orphanage Club, one of CAC’s collaboration partner, for the rest, we will put them in our next sale, which will happen outside of school.

We will donate 50% of our profit to HonDao Senior Citizen Welfare Foundation.

Charity Art Club Winter Sale Poster

Yujinia and I designed this poster for the upcoming Charity Art Club Winter Sale on 11/28, we will be donating all profits to HonDao Seniors Citizens Welfare Foundation, I want to donate to HonDao this time because I’ve been focusing on Taiwan’s elderly population issues and their life quality since 10th grade in my Personal Project. I connected with a volunteer at HonDao, I call her 玲姐 Mrs.Ling  (Below is our group photo lol. Left:Yujinia, Mid: Mrs.Ling, Right: Me) She dedicated the majority of her retirement days to Charity, she served in Drug Control Center, Jail, Senior Citizens Foundation, Orphanage center, and many more.

On 11/28, We will be hosting a winter sale, we will be mainly selling stickers and pins, further update will be in the next CAS reflection, the event requires short term planning, the document below is the Planning Document of our Winter Sale, for the planning, I believe it improves my ability on how to initiate plans, for example, I had to distribute jobs for the executives and gave them specific deadline. I also had to make certain decision with the executives such as the price of the stickers and pins. This time, the event has a better flow than last time, one thing we can still improve on is how to increase member’s engagement, and how to make members and executives want to contribute on their own instead of being asked to. I’m also aiming to make a working system for the executives to make everything more organized –> I believe I will have a more clear system by the end of November.

Activity

Yay, I made it to Basketball Varsity, for tryout, coach 謝玉娟 and I-SHOU University Players came to coach us, the tryout and practice was a new experience, and we were really honored to be coached by them, usually I could only see them on TV. The Tryout was three consecutive days, the exhaustion added up every day. And after that, we had to do our homework and prepare for summative, but I would say the morning basketball session I previously did helped me a little, since I woke up at around 4:30 – 5 during basketball session, I was used to waking up early from a mental aspect. So this time, I would sleep as soon as I got home, about 6-7 and wake up at around 3 to finish my homework. I realized doing homework in the morning is actually more productive, I barely spend anytime on my phone, because I knew that assignment is about to be turned in in 3-4 hours, unfortunately, I still missed few assignments, because it was hard to deeply concentrate for 4 straight hours. Through this tryout, I learned how to manage my time wisely based on the situation.

For practice, we have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, it’s also tiring but I don’t feel sleepy anymore when I went home. It’s still tough for me mentally, because you have to switch to study mode right after exercising, but I’m still learning.

CAS October Reflection 2 (Activity + Creativity)

End October Reflection

Creativity

Recently, I have been listening to a song called 刻在我心底的名字, it is a theme song for the movie 刻在你心裡的名字, I really liked the song so I decided to draw something based on the movie, I referenced to the image on the left. This took me about an hour to make, it was really a fun a stress-relieving process. After a day of work, this was a good productive way to relieve myself. the process wasn’t really complicated, I put the reference image as the bottom layer and I outline the characters, then I turn them into my own style of art through coloring.

Activity

  • I continued my basketball session, I start from 5 and practice to 6:40 am, I practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • I played scrimmages every Saturday with Basketball Club

In October, I spent more time playing basketball, sometimes, I would practice twice a day, morning practice, afternoon scrimmage, and on Saturday, we would play scrimmage with very high intensity because the coach is there. My goal is to make Basketball Varsity this year. Regardless of the result, I will continue to practice basketball in the morning, because It benefits me from multiple ways rather just my basketball skills, my learning outcome for this CAS experience will be Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth, and Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

What am I practicing:

This video is one of my practice day, this was filmed on Monday, on Monday, I was focusing on one single move, which is crossover, I was practice the footwork of it, and how to shift weight from left to right/right to left using my hips. I definitely improved a little, however, my dribbling is still not as shifty, because I can’t shift my weight to quickly, and my dribble is also a little laggy –> Reasons: Not explosive enough (Lack of Muscle Strength, Less Fast twitch muscle), Bad coordination because I can’t dribble low with fast speed.

I practiced dribbling for an hour, and for the next 40 minutes, I started my shooting drill as usual, I include shooting drill in every session because my target position for basketball team is small forward or shooting guard. So shooting accuracy is a crucial area I need to master.

My Experience:

I don’t feel tired anymore when I wake up, and I can automatically wake up at around that time. This has made my morning routine way better because sometimes if I have too much homework, I will choose to spend the morning to write my homework. This is why I choose to play on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday are for studying, even if I don’t have homework that day, I will still wake up and do something else, because if I always wake up at different time, it will ruin my body clock and cause a lot of acne.

For my vertical program, I stopped this week to completely focus on Basketball, and I’m going to stop from November 1 to November 6th, because we have a basketball tryout week.
