2018-2019 G.R.A.S.P Physics Lab Investigation Reflection

Over this unit, we explored about work and Machines, we were divided into 5 groups and make 5 presentations focusing on five different machines and how they work there were five machines, where is Lever, Wedge, Pulley, Screw, and Inclined Plane, Me, Claire, Hayden, and Amber were in one group and focused on Lever, exploring how it works. the experiments and research simplified “lever” for me, I actually learned a lot from this project, as well as other groups’ works.

About Lever: Lever is a machine consisting of a beam pivoted on the fulcrum, there are three classes of levers, the different class of levers do the different types of works, what they all do is increase the mechanical advantage, which means we are able to move the same load with smaller forces. reversely, as mechanical advantage decreases, we need to apply more force in order to move the same load, but most machines are designed to increase the Mechanical advantage (MA). There are three classes of levers, categorized by the locations of three points, which is the fulcrum, effort, and the load. the first class of levers has the fulcrum between the load and the effort, an example for the first is seesaw, the fulcrum is placed between the load and the effort.

the second class of lever has the fulcrum. the biggest advantage of the second class of lever is that it requires less force to move the load, an example for the second class of lever is nutcracker, as we see in this image, the effort point is placed on the handles, the load is placed between the effort point and the fulcrum, which means the nut would be the load since it is placed between.

The third class of lever has the effort between the load and the fulcrum, the disadvantage of the third class of lever is that it requires more force to move the same load. However, the load will move in a longer distance than other classes. an example of the third class of lever is a baseball bat. Image result for baseball batas it hits the baseball, the top of the baseball bat is the load, one of our hand that holds the middle of the baseball bat becomes the effort point, and the bottom of the baseball bat becomes the fulcrum.

Self-Reflection:

In our experiment, we used the second class of lever in which the load is placed between the effort point and the fulcrum to do the experiment. We were trying to test how how does the distance between the fulcrum and the load in the second-class lever affect the work it requires to lift up a 200 grams weight to 0.1 meters height. for the first trial, we placed the weight on 0.15 meter between the fulcrum and the load, distance moved 0.10937 meters also 0.10937 work had been done, our calculations were more accurate, it is approximate because the corrugated plastic was moving in a curve distance, but Claire calculated as accurate as she could. Next, we moved the weight to 0.30 meter, this time, it moved 0.10205 meter and 0.13607 word was being done, the data shows a rule, the more longer distance between the fulcrum and the load in the second-class lever, the more forces are required to move the same load (200g weight). In the third trial, the distance between the load and the fulcrum increased by 0.15 meter again, at this time ,the lever moved 0.10048 meter curvely and 0.18108 work was being done. From the data, as the distance between the load and the fulcrum increases, the distance that the weight will travel decreases; second, as the distance between the load and the fulcrum increases, more force is required to move the load and more work will be done.

In this experiment, our methods are not as valid as we thought, because there were many variables that could affect our experiment but some were uncontrollable, such as human errors and instrumental errors, our eyes levels could not be exactly the same as 10.1 cm. Instrumental error also occurred during the experiment because we might forgot to readjust the spring scale. It would be better if we used 2.5 N spring scale because it was harder to see the decimals from a 5N spring scale than a 2.5 N spring scale.

  1. What were your contributions to the success of your group’s lesson presentation?  Be specific.   What parts did you research, what parts of the experiment did you have responsibility for, what were your responsibilities for the lesson preparation and presentation?   I think I contributed the most at researching  background informations for lever, I researched about section 1 which is background information for our presentation. During our experiment, my responsibility was to stable the ruler straight and also see how much force was being done from the spring scale.
  2. Describe one part of this project that was a challenge?   How did you respond to this challenge?  One of the most difficult challenge for our group was facing uncontrollable errors, such as human errors, even though we couldn’t completely control it, but we tried our best to make the data as accurate as we could.
  3. Describe what you most enjoyed about the project? What part are you most proud of–that you say “WE DID GREAT”? I think the best part of this project was the experiment, we had a lot of fun during the experiment through building instruments and I learned the most from the experiment, such as the calculations used in our experiment.
  4. Long after this project has ended, what parts of the experience will you remember?   (…“the nightmare is over, I have blocked it completely from my mind!”…hopefully not!) This is worth as a memory of mine, I think that I actually learned the most from this project, from my group mates, from the video we watched together.etc, we communicated a lot during this project so I’m pretty sure that each of us learned new things from this project.

2017-2018 Unit Reflection

On November,27th,2017, We completed Language and literature unit 2, novel study, through this unit, we explored about novels, Equity and Equality, Equity and Equality are completely different things, Equity is changing level or condition based on their abilities. For Example, due to their lesser abilities or conditions, such as not enough height to watch a soccer game, then they can stand on a higher platform in order to be able to watch the game. However, equality is that everyone stands on the same level stage.

Through this unit, we completed several activities and projects in order to get better at understanding, analyze, and summarize stories, Here’s what we’ve completed:

The book I was reading was Uprising by Margaret, Peterson. Haddix, “Uprising” focuses on women’s rights and justice for female workers/lower classes, through BookSnaps activities, discussions, and TIEAs, I improved at understanding and analyze the story, I learned a better way to analyze stories, which is TIEA, in which “T” means topic sentence, “I” means introduction evidence, E means evidence and A means Analysis. using TIEA helps to organize what we learned and what does the author what to represent about. Character TIEA helps us to organize characters in the story, transformation, mood.etc, for example, in my story, Bella, an immigrant from Italy, transformed from a fearful girl to a brave young woman who overcame all the fears. I couldn’t get used to TIEAs. However, after few practices, I became better at organizing stories using TIEA.

We’ve done three discussions for Uprising, the purpose of this is to help us get better at analyzing stories, the way I analyze this book was to make a document and keep track of important parts in the story, quotes that are worth quoting.etc, overall, It actually helped me a lot. Over the last discussion, I felt like I should have discussed more with my groupmates. After the final discussion, we started doing “Sketchnoting” for our books. simply put, the book was talking about three young women who tried to abolish sexism and racism.  I think sketchnoting is a good and creative way to analyze a story, it suppose to be more understandable, I really enjoyed Sketchnoting.

For the final summative, we did Media PSA (AKA Public Service Advertising) my research topic was CHILD LABOR, the reason for why it was chosen as my topic is due to the book “Uprising”, Uprising talks about teens around 16 work in factory, still many countries need to abolish child labor, worldwide 218 child laborers are in employment, which is a big issue in education. because most of them are early school leavers, early school leavers cannot be educated, which would cause them having a hard time to find a job, and their children cannot be educated either due to the economic issue. I did a video using PowToon for the final project, I think making videos is a good way to spread concepts, It is easily spread on social media, I got 115 likes and 66 retweets in 2 days, I think video making helps us learn more about our chosen topics, because if we want to make a PSA video, of course, we needed detailed research results, through making video, we could also learn many new things that we didn’t know previously.

Overall, I think this Unit helped me a lot in analyzing, understanding, and organizing stories, we had done so many activities that did improve our skills, becoming more skillful based on novel study.

Equity Summative

Child Labor:

Child Labor is one of the worst problems worldwide, still many countries need to abolish Child Labor, mostly appear in developing countries. Worldwide 218 million children between 5-17 years are in employment, among them, 152 million are victims of child labor; almost half of them, over 100 million child laborers work in hazardous in agriculture, mining.

TIEA Summary (Topic sentence, Introduction, Evidence, Analysis)

Uprising, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, focuses on women’s right, Equality, and Equity, What’s the difference between Equity and Equality is equality denotes that everyone is at the same level. However, Equity doesn’t mean everyone is on the same level, but equity is everyone stands on different level according to their abilities, so they can all do the same thing.

In Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix uses examples of injustice towards women, but they eventually overcame their fears and decided to stand up for women’s right.

As they overcame their fears to this “Scary Place” they would finally willing to protest, their anger led these young women to a strike, so they started the strike.

“We will not be stupid girls!” “We will not be useless girls!” We will not be powerless girls!” (233)

Haddix’s choice to make female workers felt powerless and useless by examples of injustice which eventually triggered them, three young women, Bella, Yetta, and Jane led the union, they  believed in women’s right, they believe there is a thing called gender equality, they think every woman deserves respect, every woman needs to be treated equally, they became adamant on this point and try to stop how people view them as useless people.

MLA Citation:

Haddix, Margaret Peterson. Uprising. Simon & Schuster BFYR, 2011.

Reflection: I did well on providing examples and evidence, because my evidence does support my topic sentence, I think i also did well Topic sentence, it provides substantial identification and explanation of the content, context, language, structure, technique, and style, However, it is missing the connection between concept and the story where I have to improve on.

What I need to improve on is based on Analysis, because I added new evidence into my analysis which was unnecessary, also the sentence was too long and difficult to understand.

Uprising Discussion:

We discussed the book “Uprising” quotes, questions, techniques.etc

Uprising Sketch-noting

Uprising is a work of historical story by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The author Margaret Peterson Haddix portrays example and quotes of injustice towards female workers. three helpless, powerless young women change the U.S by their determination. they won respect and fairness for females workers.

three young women immigrated to New York illegally, Bella met her cousin Pietro, she loved Pietro, but then, Pietro left New York without notifying, Bella waited there for a long time. However, she met Yetta and Rahel, two stubborn strikers, they believe women have rights, as time passes, Bella felt she was being treated unfairly, she felt the injustice, she barely got paid due to many excuses from the bosses, and the Luciano family clamied that they didn’t send money to Bella’s faimly in Italy, instead, they used the money to heal their babies, her anger led her to a union, in the union, she met Yetta and Rahel, they also met a wealthy girl called Jane, she is completely different than general society women, Jane wanted her freedom, together, they produced resonate, Jane supported the union with economical support, unfortunately, as time passes, Rahel quitted the union, she didn’t belive that women can be treated fairly, she married her English teacher, but Yetta didn’t quit, she still belive in equality, her determination was more than ever, they earned a little respects through strikes. However, it wasn’t enough, women were still being treated unfairly, unfortunately, on March, 25th in 1911, at Triangle factory, a fire killed Jane and Yetta, and another 144 workers. As the first chapter mentioned, Mrs.Linvingston is Bella, fortunately, she got married, and had 2 babies, and they are named Yetta, and Jane, their spirits were passed down to her children, and her family would keep their passions forever.

Physics: What is a Force?

Force:

-Simply put, a force is a push or pull, or forces have both size and directionsa force can change the acceleration of an object when you see a change in an object’s motion, that is the change motion created by a forceScientist express force using a unit called the Newton (N), Newton is named after Issac Newton.

Issac Newton, Newton is named after Issac Newton in recognition of his work on classical machines, specifically Newton’s second law of motion

-All forces act on objects, for any push to occur, something must receive the push, same as pull, something will receive the pull. However, a force acts on an object doesn’t mean that motion will occur. For example, the force you are exerting on the chair does not cause the chair to move, the chair doesn’t move because the floor is also exerting a force on the chair.

Net Force: the net force is the combination of the forces acting on an object, the way you determine the net force depends on the directions of the forces, For example, if two people are moving a car to the right, two-person could be either pulling or pushing or one person pull another person push, suppose two people are pushing the car in the same direction (right) , then one person is stronger, so the car receives more forces, suppose he/she is pushing  25m/hour, and another person is pushing the car with 20m/hour, then the way you determine the answer is to add both velocities together, which will be 25m/hour+20m/hour=45m/hour, then the car is moving  45 meters per hour.

It could be forcing in the opposite directions, suppose two people are fighting for one doll, both of them are pulling, but in the opposite directions, suppose one person is pulling to the right side, and another person is pulling to the left side, but one person is stronger in which caused an unbalanced situation. Suppose the stronger person is pulling to the right side with 12N, and another person is pulling to the left with 10N, then 12-10=2N, the stronger person will win the doll with 2N stronger.

Unbalanced forces and Balanced forcesan unbalanced force is caused by a stronger force against the weaker force, like a bicycle, it can never be balanced if unless you don’t change direction and keep a constant speed, but it is almost impossible.a balanced situation is when two forces that forcing an object to the opposite directions have the same force, they are equally strong.

Jane Eyre Book Summary

Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte. Jane Eyre is an orphaned girl who lives with her aunt and uncle, after her uncle’s death, she had been abused by her aunt and sent to an orphan school that is run by a hypocritical man, Mr.Broklehurst, the students never have enough food to eat, they have not enough warm clothes either. at there, Jane finds a friend, named Helen, but after 2 weeks, Helen died caused by Typhus. One evening, when Jane is out for a walk, she met Mr.Rochester, Rochester fall in love with her after. but jane left, travels to a random direction with no money, after several years, she comes back with 5000 pounds gold from his another relative, she goes back to Thornfield, but what she saw is a ruin that got burned by a lunatic who was Rochester’s wife and Rochester becomes blind after the fire, but Jane eventually find him, they married, after 10 years, they have 1 kids but blind, they deeply believed that His blindness would be fixed, as they thought, the kid’s blindness is fixed, and they live together happily ever after

2017-2018 L&L Unit 1 Reflection

In this unit, we explored about News article, this unit included news article writing and annotation. We have done several activities that improved our news writing skills, which are many, but similar, through those activities, I’ve learned a really important skill, which is an article shouldn’t be written in the first person. Of course, I’ve learned other things.
Over this unit, we did many annotations on some articles, I’ve improved a lot at annotating articles, at first, I was struggling at that, but with over practice through classes and homework, I’ve become a better at annotating news.
The ways that make your annotation better is to categorize your commands and separate commands by colors, use 5Ws+H..etc   annotating articles helped me a lot at understanding and analyzing articles, which is based on criterion A.

For the final project, we did news articles writing, we grouped together and combined each person’s article into one newspaper, our topics are focusing on biggest problems in the community that make people anxious, or make parents anxious, such as food quality, cyber addiction, and there are 3 more topics, which is Recycling issue, Littering and water pollution, these three topics are focusing on the environment around our community, which is also problems that people worry about, and my topic is about recycling issue, some people really care, however, my article is for those people who do not care and try to convince them.

This unit is the first unit of the year, if I would grade how I felt over this unit to 10, maybe I would give it a 7 because at first, I was struggling on annotating articles, but then I finally handled the situation. However, Overall, I felt great through this unit, I like those activities we have done, especially news articles writing, in addition, I also really like reading part, we have 10 mins reading time before class every day in which our writing skills and reading could be improved.

L&L unit one

On Octobober,5th,2017 we have completed language and literature first unit, over this unit, we were focusing on news article writing.
Activities we have done through this unit:
-5Ws+H
-News article writing
-Annotations
-Compare and Contrasts
-Take notes using Turbonotes online

News Annotation

Compare & Contrast 2 Similar News Stories

Similarities:
Both two articles are focusing at Hurricane Harvey and how is the US affected, both two articles are focusing on the same two affected states which is Houston and Texas because Houston and Texas are the most affected area
Both are also focusing on the statuses of Hurricane Harvey, such as categorization of Harvey and its wind speed, how is the storm unusual, and lastly, how did its wind speed and storm change over time and how it was expected to change; both have the same information on the statuses.
Both articles mentioned about the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, he claimed that everyone has to work together to rebuild the affected state.

Differences:
Even though both two articles are focusing on the same affected areas, but the statuses of how they are affected are a little bit different caused by the different update meant the time of two articles. One is released on September,28th, 2017, and the other one was updated by 30th, August 2017, such as the older article says the city had received 20 inches of rainwater, but the newer one says the city received 24 inches of rainwater.
The newer article explains better and more detailed. For example, both two articles talk about the category of the storm and tropical storm, but the newer one explains more detailed, it talks about what speed the wind is called “Tropical storm” (39-73 miles), and how is the storm categorized by its wind speed.
One article is also focusing on rescue effort, such as “Texas Governor activated 12000 national guards, and state guard troops, other states also activated emergency workers in order to help those
