L&L Relationship Summative

In L&L, the unit that we are working on is about relationships. The class was separated into four groups. Each group was reading a different graphic novel. All of the graphic novel portrays different kinds of relationships. The graphic novel my group read was “American Born Chinese” by Gene Luen Yang. In “American Born Chinese” it talked about how Jin, the main character, wanted to fit in.

For the summative, I had to either make an original graphic novel or a draw my life video for Jin, to write one TIEA for “American Born Chinese”, to write another TIEA for one of the illustrations in “American Born Chinese” and discuss about the graphic novel.

This is my Draw My Life Video:

My TIEA for the graphic novel:
In the graphic novel “American Born Chinese”, Gene Luen Yang presents a powerful relationship that allowed one to become true and honest with oneself. The main character, Jin Wang, wanted to fit in throughout his life as a Chinese-American in the United States. So much, that he hid his true identity and became someone he wasn’t and never would be. The monkey king, disguised as Jin’s cousin, disclosed his true self to Jin and told Jin, “…perhaps it is time to reveal yours (213).” Towards the end of their conversation, the monkey king said, “You know, Jin, I would have saved myself from five hundred years’ imprisonment beneath a mountain of rock had I only realized how good it is to be a monkey (223).” Yang emphasizes how the healthy relationship built from Jin and the monkey king’s conversation transformed into a realization. When Jin was told to reveal his true self and identity, he realized that lying to himself did not improve anything nor did it solve any of his problems. When the monkey king told Jin how he realized that being himself and what he is freed him, that was when the relationship became really strong. The monkey king’s “five hundred years’ imprisonment” was like Jin’s fake identity trapping Jin in his own lies to himself. The fake identity deceived Jin and actually made him believe that the fake identity is who he really is and would be. He didn’t realize that the fake identity was really the one thing that was holding him back. When the monkey king told Jin about how he realized its good to be himself, it showed how the monkey king actually understood the feeling and know the struggle of wanting to be someone else to fit in. The message showed that even though the monkey king had the congruent feeling as Jin before, the monkey king still realized the truth and that showed how Jin could too.

My TIEA for one of the illustrations inside the graphic novel:
In the graphic novel “American Born Chinese”, Gene Luen Yang represented the change in the character’s identity using the illustration. The main character, Jin Wang, wanted to fit in desperately because he felt that being Asian was why his life wasn’t good. Eventually, he became another person, a person that his community wants him to be. Jin named his new identity as “Danny”. In the illustration, it can be seen that there was a transformation from Jin being “Danny” to being his true self again (214). Yang illustrated the change in identity that showed who “Danny” really was and how Jin felt about being another person. Jin felt that everything was bad because of being Asian and therefore, he started to morph into someone that is more like the community. However, the “someone that is more like the community”, also known as “Danny”, was somebody that was totally opposite from who he really was. From the illustration, it can be seen that when he returns to his true self, he wasn’t happy. He was worried. This showed how long he has been lying to himself and how he really feels behind the mask he was wearing. The worried expression also indicated that he didn’t like being another person, even if he lied to himself about how being “Danny” would solve everything. Contrary, the image of being “Danny” did not erase or solve any problems that he had and made them even worse. This illustration brings out the point that changing into another person or changing the identity of oneself just to fit in wouldn’t help or improve the problem or situation. This is because one would be lying to him or herself and not being honest. The illustration proves that being oneself and accepting who one really is is the way to fitting in.

L&L Bias in Media Summative

In this unit, I learned about bias and stereotypes in different medias. Throughout this unit, our class was given assignments to help improve our awareness to bias and stereotypes. I had to finish all the Checkology modules. Checkology had a lot of information and had activities that would help improve my knowledge in bias and stereotypes. I practiced annotating bias for different articles and ads. Also, I practiced annotating stereotypes in commercials, song music videos, song lyrics and TV shows.

In the first part of the summative, I had to annotate two news articles, one print ad, one commercial, song music video, song lyrics and a TV show. I would have to write a few paragraphs for each type of media.

This is my news annotation:

This is my print ad annotation:

This is the rest of the part one section:

In the second part of the summative, I had to make a product that showcases bias/stereotypes and how it affects the society or individual. For the project, I decided to make a poster that explains how bias and stereotypes affect the society or individual.

This is the picture of my poster:

It’s Time To Turn Away From Computer Controlled Lockers

Have you notice the backpacks and books in front of the lockers at KAS? Well, the thing is, it’s like a mountain over there. Why not just put the bags and books inside the lockers? Let me tell you why. Because the computer controlled lockers in KAS is often broken. So why not use mechanical lockers? KAS should use mechanical lockers because students control them, they don’t break as much, people know how to use them.

Lockers

Above is two pictures of the backpacks in front of the lockers at KAS.

Mechanical lockers don’t break as much. In schools, lockers are used for years. Lockers won’t break and you could put your school materials inside. You won’t have to carry your backpack with all your books around to classes. In KAS, most students don’t use lockers anymore. KAS uses computer controlled lockers and 56.2% of the students in middle/high school said they don’t use the lockers because they break. “First of all, the electronic lockers are prone to be stubborn, confusing, and generally malfunctioning most of the time. Though its purpose was to make things easier, it has not fulfilled that to any measure of confidence. I believe it is of our best interest not to continue to use these stressful things. Just today, one of my friends Pearce could not open his locker. We were standing there for about 15 minutes trying to get the obstinate thing open, until we were literally smashing the card against the sensor… to no avail. Nothing worked and we gave up. This has happened many times, and I do not think adding more stress on top of the horse loads of the emotion we already possess is a good idea,” said a student from high school. So that means they have to carry their backpacks around to their classes.

Most students’ backpacks are heavy and when they keep on carrying heavy backpacks around, they can damage their spinal cords. Researchers weighed the children’s backpacks and asked the children if their back hurts. 64% of the students said it hurt, at least a bit. In students reporting pain, about 12% said it was “not bad,” while almost 90% said their back pain was “bad” or “very bad.” Carrying backpacks around the school campus could hurt your spine, which if injured, you cannot do anything. You cannot feel, exercise, eat, or even breathe without help. You might say that, “Students can just put it in front of my locker or on top of my locker.” But what if it was kicked to another place, or somehow it was missing?

If schools provide mechanical lockers to students, students can control the lockers. With mechanical lockers, students turn the lock to enter the combination. When you can control something, you have power over it. When you enter your combination, you are basically giving a secret code to tell the locker to open itself. If you had the computer controlled lockers, sometimes the computer system will be dead, or broken. You can’t control the computer system.

Also, teachers would know how to use mechanical lockers, obviously because they are old (no offense). Back then, there are no high quality electronics to operate lockers, so they would have to use the mechanical lockers. Turn, click, open, put the stuff in, and slam. If you need help with the lockers, you could just ask your homeroom teacher, or your English teacher. So much more convenient.

KAS uses electronic lockers, then you would have to go to the teacher who knows how to fix that kind of lockers. I had a personal experience about fixing the lockers. I had the habit of putting my stuff inside my lockers, so I have to go to the second floor, find a teacher who knows how to fix the lockers, and then come down to the first floor to my locker. In my case, I always had to go find Vivian or Jeff. They have their own work to do and everytime when I go bother them for fixing the lockers, we are just wasting my own time. Is it worth it? Why not just buy mechanical lockers and everybody is happy and not wasting anytime?

Change the lockers to mechanical ones now! It is easy to use, it’s timesaving. If you want students to be happy, love the school, then you need to do that.

Tessellation and Self Portrait

Tessellation+SelfPortrait

This artwork is about making a tessellation and self portrait. Also, I learned how to shade, putting value in it, and using a grid for the self portrait part. When we were starting this project, we first made our self portrait. Before having a picture taken to be our guide, we used a sphere and a picture of Mr. Bean’s head. We practiced how to draw a grid and how to shade different parts. After all those practicing, we took our picture and put it into Photos and change it into a black and white picture. After Ms. Oda, our art teacher, printed the black and white photo, I drew a 2 cm grid on the black and white picture and 2 cm grid on another piece of blank paper. Of course, I started drawing my self portrait. Then, we needed to make a tessellation to put our self portrait on. I learned how to create a shape out of just a piece of paper that I can tessellate with. The shape for the tessellation is created by drawing a creative line starting and ending from the left side of the paper, then taping it across to the next section. For example, I drew a curved line starting and ending from the left side of the paper. The next thing I do is cutting out the shape. The shape should be exactly fitting into the cutted out area, then the shape will be translated across to the other side. So left to right. Repeat these steps again, but the shape would be translate from top to bottom.

The self portrait picture I chose was because I think the value are more obvious and easy to draw. For my tessellation, I made three different ones. I chose the one with curved lines because I think that one was the most unique one out of all of them. For the first pattern, I chose to put harmony in it. The outside is darker and the inside is faded lighter. The next one is a pattern with 4 different colors. I purposely chose those colors because together it is very colorful and I think it looks pretty good. Viewers might feel happy and inspirational when they see this artwork. That is because when you see something that is bright and colorful, you will feel happy and the black and white self portrait against the colorful background makes you feel motivated and inspired somehow.

The elements of art I used were line, shape, color and value. I used lines to outline the shapes of the tessellation, and parts of the features in my self portrait. I used shapes when I am drawing my tessellation and there are different shapes in the self portrait. For example, oval shapes for the eyes and the pupils will be in the shape of circles. I used colors when I colored my tessellation. I colored my tessellation in red, brown, light green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, purple, orange, yellow, and light pink (skin color). I used value when I was shading my face, making it look more 3 dimensional, not just flat. The principles of art I used were balance, rhythm, pattern, contrast, emphasis, harmony and variety. I used balance when I was drawing the tessellation. Balance was used when I drew the same pattern at the top and bottom and in the middle, there is another design. In the self portrait, you can see that the drawing is balanced, I worked very hard on all of the parts. I didn’t just focus on the hair, because it was easier, but I focused on my face, neck and even my ear! Another principle of art I used was rhythm and pattern. I think I used both of them in the same place. I created the pattern, which added rhythm to the whole drawing. The colors in the background, contrasted and emphasized the self portrait. The colors changed so fast. The background is very colorful, than the self portrait is more classic, black and white. I used harmony when I shaded the outside of the tessellation shape and then lighten it in the middle. Like I mentioned before, I used a variety of colors.

Next time, if I do a project like this, I would have more designs in the tessellation and make my self portrait look awesome. I hope that through this experience, I could use some techniques on other similar projects.

Madrid Airport Security

While researching informations about Madrid’s government, I went across a news website about how Madrid, Spain is threaten to expect an ISIS attack. I carefully read through the page and thought about this issue for a few minutes. I started thinking about terrorist attacks in the US, the Brussels bombing attack on March. Then, I started thinking and listing places terrorists mostly attack in Google Docs. Airports, celebrations, government, famous places, and more.

The one place I was very interested was the airports of cities. People come into a country by planes, everyday people go on and off planes, terrorist likes where there are a lot of people. Of course, so they could murder more innocents. That’s when I have a question, “How can Madrid protect themselves from airport terrorisms?” My hypothesis right away was, “I think Madrid should protect themselves from airport attacks by having more security checks.” I went to Google and searched “airport security” to know more about the security systems and the tools the police use. I slowly came up with a list of tools and ways to have more security. I, then, rated them and chose the top three to explain more.

There were some challenges when I wanted to learn more about the Madrid airports because I have never been there before. But, I tried my best to find the answer and to come up with a logical thesis. Madrid could protect their airports and themselves by having advanced imaging technology, reducing the size of the lines, and also screening in intersections of security.

Madrid should protect itself by having advanced imaging technology, also known as AIT. When you have an advanced imaging technology, the security could check the passenger, also it would be so much faster. The advanced imaging technology is a scanner that you go into and the securities checks if you have any weapons or not. “AIT scanners are safe for all passengers and the technology meets national health and safety standards (Advanced Imaging Technology, Syracuse Hancock International Airport).” This screening device is safe for passengers to go into.

Reduce the size of the lines in the airports really helps too. When you reduce the size of the lines, the security would be more focused on the people in the line. If you have tons of people in a line, you can’t focus on anyone or see if anyone of them is suspicious or not. Other than that, “when many people gather, or stand in line, they become an attractive target for a terrorist attack (Get Out Of Line To Stay Safe, US News & World Report).” If passengers keeps on standing in one big line, terrorist could go and set a bomb off to kill the whole line of people. Securities should reduce big sized lines so that not only passengers can be safe, security would be more organized.

When you have screenings in intersections of security, the plane ride would be much more safe. “In the interests of security, all departing passengers may be required to be screened using security (body) scanning equipment at Stansted Airport (Stansted Airport Security And Baggage, London Stansted Airport).” London Stansted Airport used this way to double check the passengers. Well, for Madrid, you can check at the beginning of when passengers are getting on the plane. Why? Because you haven’t got on the plane. If you check after, it will be great too, but that plane ride had already safely landed. Still, you have to check after departing because the terrorist might want to bomb here, not where the terrorist get on the plane. So checking before departing and after departing from the airport are always important.
There are also other ideas like tags on luggages should have names on them, or women and men should be checked separately. These ideas don’t really help that much.

You see, anyone can put another person’s name on their own bag. Maybe a terrorist have everything undercover and a tag that has their fake name on the luggage, who will notice? You can already have a fake passport, a fake identity. Tags with names on luggages, only helps with your own belongings. For example, when you go pick up your luggage. You have to see which one luggage you checked in. Also, terrorists do not often steal, they bomb, they hurt, they do it right away!

When the women and men check separately, what would help? Maybe the line gets more organized. But think about it, a terrorist can be a woman or a man. It won’t help checking like that. In fact, when the securities are separating them, they are wasting their own time.

Brussels Terrorist Attack ISIS

Slab Name

Allison Slab Name

This artwork is making our own name out of ceramics. In this unit, we learned about different ways of making ceramics. For example, wedging, slab, coil, score-and-slip… Wedging is for getting the air out of the clay. If we didn’t do that, the clay would explode inside the kiln. The kiln is where we heat the clay up so it would turn into a glass like artwork. When making a slab, we are making a thick, flat plate. That might kind of look like a pancake or pizza. Coil is when we make a long roll of clay, also known as snake. Score-and-slip is to stick pieces of clay together. The first step is to scratch both of the surface of the attaching pieces of clay by a scratching tool. Put the slip on and push to make the two pieces into one. Add soft clay to blend in and add support.

For this project, I made my first name (Allison) because a lot of people in this class has a last name of Chen. I made my first name first, which was carved out of a slab. Then I made another slab for the name because my name was almost falling apart. I think it was because of the lack of thickness and the amount of clay that is touching each other. When I was sticking the name on the other slab, I score-and-slip it on. I pressed it down so it could really be stuck on. I decided to make a flower on the top so it could give it more texture. I also carved few lines at the side so it won’t look too boring. Then I added a few dotting designs and stripes designs, that would give this artwork a pattern. I made the dotting designs by using the dotting tool, and then the stripes designs by the needle tool. I was kind of worried that the whole clay would be stuck on the canvas, but it turned out okay. The canvas is the cloth/board to work the clay on.

Some of the elements of art I used were lines, shapes, space, texture, and form. I used lines to create a pattern and to make the shapes of my name letters. Shapes because the whole project is made out of shapes. My name is a shape, the slape underneath is a shape, even my little flower is a shape. I gave my name a little space because it started out kind of big and it turned out smaller at the “n” part in Allison. I gave it some texture too. The lines gave the carving a little bumpy feeling and the flower too gave some different feeling. The lines I mentioned before are also a little bumpy. There was form because it is 3 dimensional and not just a flat piece of paper. One of the principles of art that I used was pattern. I used pattern when I was creating a design that repeats over and over again. The dot and stripes design.

I think if I tried harder and worked harder, I could have done much better. I think in this project I did okay. I tried my best, but I kind of doubt if that was my best clay project. It was really hard to wedge, since I am so small. I am kind of scared if my project would explode in the kiln. Fingers crossed! There was some broken parts at the “s” part. I kind of tried to fix it, but it just cracks open. I think the lines are not thick enough. I hope my project turns out okay.

Value Landscape Drawing

IMG_4274

My artwork was about the Spasskaya Tower of Russia. I chose this tower because it is really pretty. I love how the tower has pointy things on it. I learned about the Elements of Art, and Principles of Art. This activity was to let us practice our use of value. Value is used in the artwork by showing how each ground have different shades of the color you chose. I chose green (cool color) so I put the original color for the middle ground 1. For the middleground 2, I added a little bit of white to the original green color. For the two foregrounds, I put the two shaded green. Finally, for the two backgrounds, I put the two tinted green.

When I was planning, I drew the Spasskaya Tower, The Burj Al Arab, and Big Ben. When I drew Big Ben, and I saw places that it will be very hard to draw, too many details. When I drew The Burj Al Arab, I found out that it looked kind of weird. It was pretty and all, but I don’t think I would like to draw that building for this landscape project. Then I started considering drawing the Spasskaya Tower. Spasskaya Tower was not that easy to draw too, but in the three, I thought the tower was the prettiest. Once, I decided which building I was going to draw, I drew it out on a piece of A4 paper. I folded in half, after I was done drawing. I colored the paper with red (warm color) and green. The right side with green, and left side with red. I chose green because I thought the trees in my drawing will look more mysterious feeling. I thought with red, the building would look okay, but the trees would look kind of weird.

The Elements of Art that I used were line, space, color, and value. I used different lines to outline the different foregrounds. I used space for the two buildings at the back of the tower. I didn’t draw the buildings very big, instead I drew it small, because it is in the background, very far away. The color I used, like I mentioned (a lot of times), for this value landscape drawing is green. I used different values of green to show the grounds, tint – farther, shade – closer. I used balance for my drawing by putting the trees where they were. I didn’t just put it all on one side. I also used proportion for my drawing because I didn’t make my foreground very small and background very big. I didn’t emphasize anything, everything was just drawn in harmony/unity.

I think I could do better at painting the little detailed parts of my drawing. When I was painting that part, I was kind of rushing through and was not paying close attention. Because of the color I chose, I had to mix two different colors, so I can’t get the same color every time. For example, the two building in the back. It was short of blue and I don’t really like it. I hope my craftsmanship would be better next time.

Jerusalem By Allison Chen

In class, we learned about Mesopotamia and we had to make a presentation for a city-state we chose that was in Mesopotamia. We had a lot of choices and I chose Jerusalem. So I made this video in PowToon that I uploaded to YouTube. And here is the video I made!

Here is the link that I want to show you for the 50 second video: http://jerusalem.com/

It will pop up right away. Hope you like it!!
