Unit 3 Reflection

Key Concept: Time, place and space
There were a lot of different activities that I did during this Unit. We had levels that we would have to go through. There were 5 posters that indicates where each of us were in. To represent ourselves on the posters/levels, we created our own Coat of Arms. My Coat of Arms looked like this:
Ms. Gilbert created a website that allowed to access documents and directions of what we have to do in each level. In the Introduction, we had to work on our Coat of Arms, upload it to ThingLink and add annotations of why we chose the symbols that were drawn in our Coat of Arms. We were given two websites that consisted symbols and their meanings. After using ThingLink, we had to upload it to padlet. To have bonus points, we had to upload it to three different social medias. I completed that task and got 15 more bonus points.
In each level, we would have questions that we would have to answer. The information would be from the textbook. Each level would be about a certain chapter. There would be activities, like contests, skits and simulations, that would be required to be complete. There would also be different bonus activities for each level. Some are videos, questions, letters or maps. Each of the activities would relate to the topic of the level.
Each block/class was a team. At the end of each level, Ms. Gilbert would set a due date for the assignments, you can still turn it in after the date, but it would not count as class points. Ms. Gilbert would find the average of the points to determine who the winning class is.
I learned about how the transition between the Roman Empire to Medieval Europe and how Medieval Europe ended. I learned that Christianity was the center of the society. During the Introduction, we learned about the location and geography of Europe. It is close to Jerusalem, where Judaism started. Christianity is a religion derived from the religion, Judaism. The religion soon became the daily lives of the people living in Medieval Europe. The Christian religion became so common at the time, “Age of Faith” was the name some historians call the Middle Ages. I also learned about trading, life and systems during the Medieval times. Living during that time was very different from living today.
Some of the challenges that I faced during this Unit was that there were other homework assignments that were also due that was not from I&S, so I would have to plan my time and use my time wisely and not getting off track. During the summative, I had to make sure I have progress each day so I would not have to wait till the very end to finish the whole game board. This is what my summative game looked like:
My favorite part about this Unit was our class winning Level 2. It really motivated me to do other challenge assignments. It also made me really happy. I also liked working on my summative. I was proud of the work I completed. I spent many hours on the game, creating questions cards, drawing the game board, thinking of a fun game that is also educational and would be related to this Unit.
I think the questions were great. It allowed me to understand more about the sections in the chapters.
From the assessment rubric, I feel that I undertook the activities in the Unit pretty good. I tried my best on every assignment. I learned that sometimes I would not be that careful and would make some mistakes. I would improve by rereading more. I also feel that my grammar was not so strong. I would make the answers better by revising it.
I&S Unit 2 Summative
Roman Republic Presentation
In this Unit for Individuals and Societies, we learned about the Ancient Greece, the Persian Empire and the Roman Empire. We learned about the Ancient Greek Government, Athens, Sparta, the Greco-Persian Wars, Alexander the Great, the Roman Republic and how Rome changed from a republic to an empire. For the summative of Unit 1, is the key concept of systems. Systems are how something works. We had to pick one of the four choices of the system our teacher had listed. I chose Roman Republic as my system that I am going to do a presentation on. The Roman Republic is a system because it is how the government of Rome worked before Rome became an Empire. I improved in this Unit by learning new things that I didn’t really understand before. An example is, I learned more about the Greek government had changed over time and how it transferred from one to another. I also learned new vocabulary words, such as consuls. Now I know what consuls mean. Consuls are the elected officials that has the most power. In the Roman Republic, the consuls were elected every year. Here is the presentation on Roman Republic, which also will talk more about consuls.
Madrid Airport Security
While researching informations about Madrid’s government, I went across a news website about how Madrid, Spain is threaten to expect an ISIS attack. I carefully read through the page and thought about this issue for a few minutes. I started thinking about terrorist attacks in the US, the Brussels bombing attack on March. Then, I started thinking and listing places terrorists mostly attack in Google Docs. Airports, celebrations, government, famous places, and more.
The one place I was very interested was the airports of cities. People come into a country by planes, everyday people go on and off planes, terrorist likes where there are a lot of people. Of course, so they could murder more innocents. That’s when I have a question, “How can Madrid protect themselves from airport terrorisms?” My hypothesis right away was, “I think Madrid should protect themselves from airport attacks by having more security checks.” I went to Google and searched “airport security” to know more about the security systems and the tools the police use. I slowly came up with a list of tools and ways to have more security. I, then, rated them and chose the top three to explain more.
There were some challenges when I wanted to learn more about the Madrid airports because I have never been there before. But, I tried my best to find the answer and to come up with a logical thesis. Madrid could protect their airports and themselves by having advanced imaging technology, reducing the size of the lines, and also screening in intersections of security.
Madrid should protect itself by having advanced imaging technology, also known as AIT. When you have an advanced imaging technology, the security could check the passenger, also it would be so much faster. The advanced imaging technology is a scanner that you go into and the securities checks if you have any weapons or not. “AIT scanners are safe for all passengers and the technology meets national health and safety standards (Advanced Imaging Technology, Syracuse Hancock International Airport).” This screening device is safe for passengers to go into.
Reduce the size of the lines in the airports really helps too. When you reduce the size of the lines, the security would be more focused on the people in the line. If you have tons of people in a line, you can’t focus on anyone or see if anyone of them is suspicious or not. Other than that, “when many people gather, or stand in line, they become an attractive target for a terrorist attack (Get Out Of Line To Stay Safe, US News & World Report).” If passengers keeps on standing in one big line, terrorist could go and set a bomb off to kill the whole line of people. Securities should reduce big sized lines so that not only passengers can be safe, security would be more organized.
When you have screenings in intersections of security, the plane ride would be much more safe. “In the interests of security, all departing passengers may be required to be screened using security (body) scanning equipment at Stansted Airport (Stansted Airport Security And Baggage, London Stansted Airport).” London Stansted Airport used this way to double check the passengers. Well, for Madrid, you can check at the beginning of when passengers are getting on the plane. Why? Because you haven’t got on the plane. If you check after, it will be great too, but that plane ride had already safely landed. Still, you have to check after departing because the terrorist might want to bomb here, not where the terrorist get on the plane. So checking before departing and after departing from the airport are always important.
There are also other ideas like tags on luggages should have names on them, or women and men should be checked separately. These ideas don’t really help that much.
You see, anyone can put another person’s name on their own bag. Maybe a terrorist have everything undercover and a tag that has their fake name on the luggage, who will notice? You can already have a fake passport, a fake identity. Tags with names on luggages, only helps with your own belongings. For example, when you go pick up your luggage. You have to see which one luggage you checked in. Also, terrorists do not often steal, they bomb, they hurt, they do it right away!
When the women and men check separately, what would help? Maybe the line gets more organized. But think about it, a terrorist can be a woman or a man. It won’t help checking like that. In fact, when the securities are separating them, they are wasting their own time.
